FAQ’S

Free Boiler Questions

Who can get a free boiler ?

Only homeowners and private tenants can apply. Tenants renting privately will need to get permission from their landlord first. If you have a verbal tenancy agreement or live with parents Ofgem’s unwritten tenancy agreement can be used to demonstrate your status.

How long are the free grants available ?

Boiler grants will be available until the Energy Company Obligation closes its doors, which will be on the 31 March 2017. Energy Providers have agreed to make a funding pot of £1.3 billion available for each year the scheme is operational.

What are the qualifications ?

The free boiler scheme isn’t open to everyone unfortunately. You have to be on benefits to apply and the criteria is very strict. For example pensioners need to be in receipt of Pension Credit; a state pension alone will not be enough.

Why are the energy companies doing this ?

Energy providers risk massive fines if they don’t meet carbon emissions targets set by the Government.

Free Insulation questions

What is cavity wall insulation?

Many homes were built with a gap between two layers in the outer wall. This gap can now be filled with insulation which will reduce the amount of fuel you use to heat your home to the same temperature.

Will cavity wall insulation damage my property?

Cavity wall insulation is installed through holes about the size of a ten pence piece. In un-rendered homes the installers will always try to drill through and fill the cement because it is easier for them and will avoid damaging your bricks.

Does Cavity Wall insulation cause damp?

There’s a misconception that cavity insulation causes damp. But according to a Which? report this is very rare and, in fact, most experts argue that your walls should always be insulated due to the potential savings on your energy bills.

What is Loft insulation?

Loft insulation is very straight forward; it is where you put insulation material into your loft’s joist and or rafters to stop heat leaving through your roof.

Why should I get Loft insulation?

Heat rises and because of this, a house without the recommended loft insulation, will lose around a quater of its heat.

And, by having your loft properly insulated, it will ensure the energy efficiency of your roof space for at least 40 years.

ECO funding questions

What is the Government ECO programme?

Energy Companies Obligation (ECO) is a 5 year Government programme which requires energy suppliers to help British households to make homes more energy efficient.

How do I qualify for ECO ?

You can potentially qualify for free home improvements under the Energy Company Obligation (ECO) based on:
Postcode area where you live.
– Type of house you live in.
– The government benefits you or someone living in your home receives.

How much money would I save with energy saving improvements?

The Government studied 900,000 gas bills and found that gas use in homes fitting cavity wall insulation typically fell by about 15%.

Homes getting loft insulation used about 10% less fuel after the work was carried out.

The Energy Saving Trust advise that a typical 3 bedroom semi-detached house could save up to:

£145/year with cavity wall insulation

£150/year with the recommended 270mm of loft insulation

£270/year with solid wall insulation

£305/year with a new energy efficient condensing boiler

£50/year by draught proofing around windows and doors

£130/year by fitting a hot water tank jacket to an uninsulated tank

However the saving in any one year will depend upon the external temperature, your fuel tariff and your heating choices i.e. how warm you want to make your home. The savings listed above are not cumulative.

In some instances we may be able to offer subsidised improvements, meaning you make a small contribution towards the cost of having improvements installed in your home.
